  1. If George Gerswhin heard this cd, he'd probably turn over in his grave. It's just an insult to the man's art to cover his songs by just singing over a Casio beat (refer to tracks 1, 4, 10, 12, 13, and 14). But the biggest disappointments came from the big names on the cd-- namely Natalie Merchant. Her version of "But Not for Me" is soooo boring/5(17).

  6. Ella Fitzgerald did two takes on the Gershwin songbook. This master release is for the first of the two, the recordings arranged by Sy Oliver and accompanied by pianist Ellis Larkins. Later, in , Fitzgerald recorded the massive 5 LP Gershwin songbook set w. Nelson Riddle's orchestra (see Sings The George And Ira Gershwin Song Book). Do.
  7. George Gershwin's short but productive career has always been associated in my mind with the Broadway musical. Much more so than that another composer from that same period of the 's's whom I recently reviewed in this space, Cole Porter/5(6).
  8. It helps that songs are first-rate gems by Gershwin brothers and they obviously suit her fine. Not everything are ballads - Larkins sets a rhythm on "My One And Only" and "Maybe" though Fitz somehow finds something new in old standards like "Someone To Watch Over Me" or "I've Got A Crush On You".
  9. George Gershwin and Fred Astaire first met in NYC when both were teenagers. George was a songplugger on Tin Pan Alley and Fred and his sister Adele had come in looking for material. George commented to Fred that it would really be great if some day I wrote a show and you starred in it.
